Submersible Monitoring System

SUBMERSIBLE MONITORING SYSTEM (SMS) is an underwater noise monitoring system.

Institute for Water of the Republic of Slovenia needed a system for monitoring underwater noise in the Slovenian sea, in order to be in compliance with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council (DIRECTIVE 2008/56/EC).

For this purpose we developed the Submersible Monitoring System. It was a custom developed system, but it can now also be purchased. For underwater sound measurement it uses sound level meter Bruel & Kjaer 2250 with hydrophone Bruel & Kjaer 8105. (If the customer chooses Bruel & Kjaer 2270, two hydrophones can be connected.)  The hydrophone can be immersed up to 1000 m, in our case it is installed 4 m below sea level. To enable recording of larger amounts of data, a hard disk with 1 TB capacity was installed. Additional features to sound pressure level logging: frequency analysis; recording can be triggered at certain sound pressure level. The system features 3G connectivity, which enables users to monitor the measurement live via internet. The system in current setup is powered from the lighthouse, but it also features a battery that can be charged by a solar panel. The system is enclosed in an IP65 (NEMA 4) compliant case – that means it is dust tight and water jets resistant.

SMS was installed in January 2015 at the lighthouse at Debeli rtič.
